Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, AAUA emerged overall winner of Professor Akinsola Akiwowo Inter-University Debate Competition.
Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria, has emerged the overall winner of the maiden edition of Professor Akinsola Akiwowo Inter-University Debate Competition which took place at Obafemi Awolowo, University, OAU, Ile-Ife, Osun State.
The debate, titled, “Ethno-religious Bigotry: The Mother of Terrorism,” was organized by the Nigerian Sociology and Anthropology Students Association (NSASA) of OAU. It featured the host institution, University of Lagos, University of Ibadan, Ekiti State University, University of Osun and Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State.
Miss Ifeoluwa Oluwatuase (400-Level) and Mr. Samson Adeoye (300-Level), both of the Sociology Department of AAUA, were declared overall winners at the end the third and final stage of the competition.
Receiving the Winner’s plaque in his , the Head of the Department of Sociology, Dr. Femi Tinuola, said, “This victory is a display of the ability and responsiveness of our students who have yielded to adequate and effective training by the crop of lecturers in the Department of Sociology. And the victory is dedicated to Professor Ajibefun Igbekele, our Vice Chancellor, who provided the enabling environment for such a giant victory.”
He said the Department was excited about the feat despite receiving the invitation to participate in the competition very late, adding that the victory was not unconnected with the track record of excellence in the University.
Professor Akiwowo was a frontline sociologist in Nigeria who, through his theory of ‘ajogbe & ajobi’, carved a niche for himself in indigenous sociology. He applied his theories toward putting up a clear understanding of human relationships in the African context. He retired at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, and later died in a German Hospital a few years ago.NGSchoolz Team
